At some point in your 30’s you start to loose muscle mass and function.  Physically inactive people will lose 5% of their muscle mass every 10 years after age 30.  Therefore, by age 60, you have lost 15% of your muscle mass, if you do not perform formal strengthening exercise.

Once you loose muscle mass, you soon begin to loose bone mass.  This is because muscles pull on bones and that makes bones stronger.  The weaker the muscle, the weaker the bone.  In the next blog, we will discuss which exercises are best to prevent muscle and bone loss as we age.
